Gout is a severely misunderstood disease. It is caused by too much uric acid in the blood, which can form tiny needle-like crystals that can build up almost anywhere in the body. But there’s more to gout than may meet the eye.

There is much more to out-of-control gout than meets the eye, and many people don’t understand what it’s like to live with this serious, chronic disease.

Ian was excited to help expose the effects of uric acid and the truth of living with out-of-control gout through the Portraits of Gout Revealed project.
Born in London in 1961, he attended Goldsmiths College and received his BA with honors at the London College of Printing and Master of Arts at Birmingham University Aston.
Ian’s work is inspired by his interest in the use of materials to explore the interaction between people and nature and between the natural and the artificial (man-made).
Evan was thrilled by the opportunity the Portraits of Gout Revealed project offered to provide a platform for an underrepresented community like those living with gout.
After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and printmaking from the University of Central Florida in 2018, Evan worked as a printer at UCF’s Flying Horse Editions, a collaborative printmaking research space for visual artists. He received his Master of Fine Arts in printmaking from Temple University on a fellowship.
Evan works across a diverse range of processes, including glass, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, and painting. He currently lives and works in Evergreen, Colorado.
For Milenko, the Portraits of Gout Revealed project provided a unique opportunity to engage with the experience of living with out-of-control gout.
Born in Belgrade, Serbia in 1983, Milenko graduated with a BA from the University of Arts in Belgrade’s Faculty of Applied Arts, Department of Applied Graphics. He completed his master’s studies at the Tokyo University of The Arts in the Department of Oil Painting.
